A Parent’s Guide to Using Montessori Three Part Cards at Home

|Ayesha Masoodi

If you’re new to Montessori, three part cards might look a little confusing at first. The good news is they’re actually very simple to use, and you don’t need any teaching background to get started.

Three part cards are designed to support language learning in a calm, hands on way, while following your child’s pace. They help make learning feel natural and pressure free, both for the child and the parent.

What Age Are Three Part Cards For?

There is no strict age for three part cards. Many families introduce them during toddlerhood or the early preschool years, but what matters most is your child’s interest. Some children enjoy looking at and naming pictures early on, while others engage more as their language develops. You can always start simply and build over time.

What Are Three Part Cards?

Each vocabulary item includes three cards:

  • A control card with the picture and the word
  • A picture card
  • A word card

These cards help your child move from seeing and naming, to recognizing, and eventually toward early reading over time.

How to Use Them Step by Step

Step 1: Start with the Control Cards.
Lay out 3 to 4 control cards on a mat or table. Keep it simple. Name the object slowly and clearly. There is no need to quiz your child. Just model the language.

Step 2: Let Your Child Explore.
Allow your child to look closely at the pictures. They may point, repeat the word, or simply observe. All of this counts as learning. If they walk away, that is okay too.

Step 3: Match the Picture Cards.
Once your child is familiar with the images, place the picture cards next to the control cards and demonstrate how to match them. Then invite your child to try.

Step 4: Add the Word Cards When They Are Ready.
Word cards usually come later, but if your child shows interest earlier, follow their lead. Place the picture and control card side by side and invite them to match the word cards. If they are not interested, you can set the word cards aside and return to them another day.

What If My Child Wants to Use the Word Cards Right Away?

That is completely okay. Montessori is all about following the child. Some children are naturally curious about words earlier than others, and that curiosity should be encouraged. There is no right or wrong order.

Why This Works

Three part cards break learning into small, achievable steps. They help children notice, name, match, classify, and slowly move toward early reading, all without pressure.

And the best part is you do not need to be a teacher to do this. Simply offer the cards, follow your child’s lead, and let learning unfold naturally.
