If you’ve ever felt unsure about how to introduce letter sounds at home, or worried that you’re not doing “enough” - you’re not alone.
This is one of the questions I hear most often from parents:
Where do I even start?
Do I need to teach the alphabet first?
Am I doing this right?
I created this guide to answer those questions in a way that feels calm, clear, and doable.
Why I Created This Guide
I’m a former Montessori teacher and a mom, and for many years I worked with young children in Montessori classrooms supporting early language development. Over time, one thing became very clear to me: children don’t need pressure, drills, or long lessons to learn. They need simple, consistent exposure and adults who trust the process.
In Montessori, we start with sounds, not letter names. We keep presentations short. We follow the child. And we focus on building a strong foundation rather than rushing toward reading.
This is the same approach I used with my students, and it’s the same approach I now use with my own child at home.
I wanted to take what I used in the classroom and turn it into something parents could confidently use at home, without needing a classroom, special training, or the “perfect” setup.
What This Guide Covers
This free, printable guide is designed to help you get started with introducing letter sounds using Montessori principles, adapted for home.
Inside the guide, you’ll find:
- A clear explanation of why Montessori starts with sounds instead of letter names
- Simple, step by step guidance for introducing letter sounds at home
- Examples of what to say — and what to avoid saying
- Practical tips you can use right away
- Free printable letter sounds to use right away!
It’s meant to feel supportive, not overwhelming, and to remind you that learning doesn’t need to look like a lesson to be effective.
You Don’t Need a Classroom
One of the most important things I want parents to know is this: you don’t need a classroom, special training, or a perfect setup to support your child’s early learning.
If you can sit beside your child, trace a letter, and say one sound clearly, you are already doing enough. That’s how this work happens in Montessori classrooms, and it’s something you can absolutely do at home.
